Evaporative Air Conditioning

Air Conditioning > Cooling Type > Evaporative Air Conditioning

A well-maintained evaporative cooling system should last for decades, providing you with that refreshing ‘sea breeze’ feeling that only evaporative cooling can provide during the summer months.

Evaporative cooling creates air with a level of humidity benefitting those who suffer from hay fever or allergies which can become inflamed from the excessively dry hot air other solutions can provide.

Evaporative cooling works by drawing in the warm air from the outside and filtering it through moist pads that act to cool the air. It is the most cost effective and healthiest way to cool your home. This natural air is blown through a fan into your home for you to enjoy. This is much like the sea breeze you may have felt while being close to the ocean. Hot air blows over the water, causing a small portion of water to evaporate and soak up the heat. The evaporation cools the air, creating the sea breeze. Naturally, the evaporative cooling cost of operation is usually lower than other systems.

Ensuring your evaporative cooling system is well maintained also saves you money in the long run. Cooling units that are in poor condition work harder to produce cool air flow while using more electricity and water and putting more pressure on the system, which in turn accelerates wear and tear on other components.

A well-maintained system will last for decades, providing you with that refreshing ‘sea breeze’ feeling that only evaporative cooling can provide.

Regular Servicing of your Evaporative Cooling System

Regular servicing is also crucial for the health of those in your home. As water is a key component used in the cooling process, faulty systems may not fully drain water after use. This can lead to mould forming with mould spores being blown through your home the next time the system is in use. This can cause damage to your respiratory system, particularly in young children.

Another common task we perform during servicing is checking the cooling pads for dirt and grime. This can be easily drawn into the system where it builds upon the pads. When the pads become blocked they lose their ability to emit cool air. Fortunately, in most cases cleaning the pads is a simple task that assists your system to work at its best.

Affordable evaporative cooler repair

The following are signs that your Evaporative Air Conditioner requires repair.  Nortan provides high quality servicing for all evaporative coolers.

Your Evaporative Air Conditioning Unit does not start

  • Blown fuse
  • Breaker has tripped
  • Damage to wiring

Unusual Odour

  • This could be due to stagnant water or mildew. This can often cause mould, which leads to mould spores being circulated through the air in your home which is harmful to respiratory health.

Airflow has decreased

  • The exhaust ducts are blocked
  • Loose belt
  • Dry filter pads
  • Blocked pads from the build-up of dirt and grime

If your system is showing any of the above symptoms, Nortan Air Conditioning and Heating can conduct immediate evaporative cooling repairs and, in most cases, get your system running like new again.

However, if the evaporative cooling unit still does not run, Nortan can offer affordable new air conditioning system installation service on the spot so you are ready for the upcoming hot summer.

FAQ about Evaporative Coolers

Does evaporative cooling need servicing?

Evaporative cooling systems require regular service checks just so they can keep all parts in good condition. These regular checks provided by a professional air conditioner serviceman would ensure that the system is functioning correctly.

How often should evaporative cooler pads be changed?

For optimal performance, filter pads should be changed every few years, depending on the pads used, your water quality, local conditions and how often your evaporative cooler is used. If you’re unsure if your filter pads need changing, we suggest referring to the unit’s Owner’s Manual or contacting an air conditioning professional.

What is the lifespan of an evaporative cooler?

Evaporative cooling systems were built to last a long time. The average life expectancy is 15 – 20 years.

Do evaporative coolers use a lot of water?

Evaporative coolers use both electricity and water. How much water is used depends on the humidity of the day and the fan speed that the unit is set to operate on. A portable unit might use up to 4 litres per hour while a central system could use as much as 25 litres per hour.

At what humidity do evaporative coolers become ineffective?

Although evaporative coolers are energy-efficient and affordable cooling devices, they’re only suitable in certain environments, particularly in areas where temperatures rise above 27 degrees and humidity levels remain below 50%.

Can you leave evaporative cooling on overnight?

You can keep it running 24/7 until the hot spell ends. You can turn the aircon on to fan only overnight if the night temperatures are in the mid-20s or keep it running overnight if the temperature is close to 30 degrees.

Can evaporative cooling make you sick?

A well-maintained unit won’t make you sick. The key is maintenance. Your cooler should get fresh water every three to four weeks to prevent stagnation and bad odours.

Do you keep windows open with evaporative cooling?

For an evaporative air conditioner to work effectively, some windows or outside doors must be open, or some other form of ventilation provided. This is to allow the hot air to escape outside of the building. The best approach is to open the windows or outside doors that are the furthest away from the air conditioning vents or ducts. In the rooms with air conditioning vents, try to have an exhaust area of open window (or door) that is about twice the size of the vent opening.

Can you change evaporative cooling to reverse cycle?

Unfortunately, you cannot simply remove the evaporative air conditioner and install a ducted reverse cycle unit to get heating and cooling.

It is more expensive swapping evaporative to reverse cycle aircon than it is to install new ducted reverse cycle aircon. This is because the existing evaporative system needs removing entirely and a full ducted reverse cycle system needs to be installed.
